Week 5

 Thursday, September 9, 2021

Greetings from first grade!

This has been a great week and we are excited to jump into spelling.  We've been practicing our focus and attention skills throughout the day.  This week, we will be learning how to include helpful thoughts to keep going when we are doing something challenging in our SEL lesson.

REMINDERS

👉Please make sure your child reads every night for 30 minutes out loud.  Scientific reports have shown that "...unless students learn to read by the end of first grade, they are highly likely to remain poor readers and suffer academic difficulties across all subjects...if they do not learn to read at 'proficient' or 'advanced' levels, they will be disadvantaged in 21st century society." (Patton & Murdoch, 2014).

👉Please remember that all Fridays are Dress Down Fridays. Unless you have paid at the office, you will need to send a dollar for your student to participate in this school fundraiser. Otherwise, please send your student in school uniform.

👉Attendance in the first grade is also very important. We cover a lot of material on all days of the week and students will fall behind if they consistently miss days.

👉Beyblades club has started and will be meeting after school every other Thursday from 3-3:30. You will need to provide transportation from school for students that stay for this club.

 Dear Parents and Families,

We have had another exciting week in first grade!  We are sending home packets for picture day today or tomorrow so please check your child's bag.  Picture day will be next week on Tuesday, August 31st.  They can either wear their school uniform or best dress.

Please remember to make sure that your child is not bringing toys to school.  We have still been having some toys being brought, so please check with your child to make sure all toys stay home.  Also, our inside and outside drinking fountains are working so all students have access to water.

For Language Arts, we will be focusing on capital letters, identifying open and closed syllables, silent final "e" jobs, declarative sentences, identifying nouns and verbs, and identifying elements of an informative.

For math next week, we will be starting Chapter 1 Addition Concepts.  This chapter, as well as the next one, will be review from last year.  These chapters will be familiar and even easy for some students, but they will lay the foundation for the next chapters which will challenge them with new math concepts.

We have been enjoying the year so far and look forward to our first grade adventures in learning!

 Hello Parents and Families,

We have finished our first week of school and the students have been amazing. We have finished all of our benchmark testing and we are ready to move forward.

Parents please work with your child learning to tie their shoes, this is a very important skill they need to know in first grade. We are also having lots of children bringing toys, we would appreciate your help in keeping toys at home.

All Fridays are $1 Dress Down Day (students must follow the Middle School dress code on this day, jeans, T-Shirts, appropriate shoes, etc.) This is a fundraiser for our school. If the child does not pay $1 they need to be dressed in school uniform. You have an option to pay by the week, month, year or however you would like to pay. Participating on Dress Down Friday is optional.

This week in language arts we will be finishing our ABC's, starting phongrams 27-45 (please practice these at home), syllables, reading/segmenting words, and abbreviations. Spelling words will start in a few weeks, we will keep you posted.

In math we will start our number review.

Next week is end of year testing. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep, eats before school, and is here on time. These tests are required by our administration. If your child misses one, or part of one, it will have to be made up. This will take place during recess or electives.

Please look for an information letter and permission slip for our upcoming field trip to come home on Monday, May 17. The field trip will take place on Monday, May 24. If you would like to join us, we would love to have volunteers.

Our dance performance is taking place this Friday, May 14. Please have your child go to their classroom at 6:30 p.m. The show will begin at 7:00. Immediately after their dance they will need to be picked up by you at the north hallway door. At this point they can stay with you to watch the rest of the show.
